"The SAN-TS'AI T'U-HUI, 'Tripartite picture arrangement', was published about 1610 and was conceived more as a collection of illustrations with supporting text rather than as the more usual kind of Chinese encyclopedia with an extensive array of quotations from the Classics and later books. Complete copies of the work seem to be rare and the photographs used for the present book have been taken from a fine copy in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University. Although only printed once in China the work has an added importance in that a Japanese adaptation of it, WAKAN SANSAI ZUE, 'Japanese-Chinese tripartite (picture) arrangement', was published in 1715."
