1 Embree, John F. and Lillian Ota Dotson BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE PEOPLES AND CULTURES OF MAINLAND SOUTHEAST ASIA
New Haven Yale University, Southeast Asia Studies 1950 Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
16 x 24 cm.; pg. xxxiii, 821, xii; Preface, periodicals cited, critical list of bibliographies, maps, addenda. "The aim of this bibliography is to bring together a list of the main publications of the peoples and cultures of the area in order to provide a base for future research. The present work includes books and articles on the region in English and in European languages. The area covered includes Assam, Chittagong, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (Tonkin, Annam and Cochin-China). A special section on the 'tribes' of South China is also included. Malaya is not included but much material on Malayan culture is to be found in Raymond Kennedy's BIBLIOGRAPHY OF INDONESIAN PEOPLES AND CULTURES (Yale 1945). We have included references on the peoples of peninsular Siam and Burma. The subjects covered under the rubric 'peoples and cultures' include: race, racial history and migration, ethnology, cultural history, social organization and law, religion, folklore, language and writing. No attempt is made to include political history, economics or welfare though all of these fields are partially included in various contexts. Human geography is largely included in the ethnology sections and some material on education is included under cultural history."
