"With their copies of the Journal (JSBRAS 14-17) the members of the Society in 1885-1887 received a separate booklet, entitled 'Notes and Queries'. This experiment did not, however, attract sufficient support to justify its continuation, and so after four issues had appeared, publication ceased. The republication in this volume of the complete text of the four issues of 'Notes and Queries' reflects the general aim of the Society, to make available to the modern reader and researcher its entire output of periodical publications. " Subjects written about in 'Notes and Queries' appear under various headings, including botany, history, language, natural history, Malay folklore, social customs, medicine, games and amusements, biography, and natural history.
