Falla, a trained nurse, was engaged in a research project to survey demography and disease patterns, economics and pharmaceutical drug supplies in rebel territory and to investigate the viability of a village health-care scheme, but such matters are not the primary focus of this book which, in the author's words, 'is, rather, a portrait of what appeared to me to be a very singular thing--a completely illegal and unrecognised nation state defended by only a few thousand armed men, which has yet been the home of thousands of families since well before I was born'. Falla draws extensively on past literature about the Karen people while providing, above all, a closely observed and intense account of contemporary village life in the Karen Free State (Kawthoolei) based on thelives of individual Karens (including the book's eponymous True Love and Bartholomew)."
