"In August 1967, the Tribal Research Centre held a symposium at Chieng Mai with financial support from the Asia Foundation. The symposium was entitled 'The Hill Tribes and Thailand'. One aim of this meeting was to bring together social scientists who were working in the region to discuss research developments. The other aim was to promote discourse between research specialists--who were mainly foreigners--and officers of the Thai Government who administer the northern Provinces. A total of eighty two people participated, and eleven papers were read over a four day period. Ample time was laid aside for discussion, which was sometimes lively. This volume comprises the proceedings of the symposium. "
