"The Sema tribe with which this monograph deals is one of the many Naga tribes inhabiting the hills between Assam and Burma. Since the first edition of this volume was published in 1922 the Sema Naga tribe has undergone a very complete change. The account given was compiled mostly between the years 1915 and 1920, and whereas today the whole tribe forms part of Nagaland and is almost, if not entirely, Christian, of the American Baptist persuasion, it was then almost entirely pagan, and that portion of it living east of the Tizu river was unadministered and only interfered with by British officials when it made the error of collecting a head from some member of an administered and revenue-paying village..."
